Smart growth principals were applied to the master planning for the redevelopment the of 5.5 acre St. John of God Hospital site, including adaptive reuse of medical buildings and shared parking. The $38 million, seven building, mixed use residential community consisting of 92 market rate cooperative housing units, 116 low-income assisted living units, a 70 bed nursing facility, and an AIDS hospice.
The design issues were to reconcile the architecture of the new buildings with the existing historic structures, and to create outdoor spaces that promote healthy living. In keeping with these goals, a tree preservation and management plan was created in consultation with an arborist, resulting in preservation of nearly 100 mature shade trees. |
